SR-22 Basics

facebook twitter indeed indeed

While most people never have to deal with an SR-22, people who have too many tickets or a DUI conviction are familiar with it. Many people mistakenly refer to and SR-22 as “SR-22 insurance.” However, an SR-22 is not an insurance policy. An SR-22 is simply a document that comes from your insurance company that verifies that you have met all of the car insurance requirements of your state.

You are required to have an SR-22 is you are determined to be a “negligent operator” by the DMV, which means you have too many violations and you have been warned that you may lose your license, or your license has already been suspended. You will also need an SR-22 if you have been convicted of a DUI, or if you were at fault for an accident and did not have any insurance.

If you commit a very serious violation, your insurance company may not want to take the risk of insuring you, and may cancel your coverage. If that happens, you will not be able to get an SR-22 because you will not have any insurance.
